Nominee Rachel Platten Remembers the AMA Performance that Inspired Her

Nominee Rachel Platten Remembers the AMA Performance that Inspired HerABC/Fred LeeSunday night, Rachel Platten is up for her first-ever American Music Award in the category of Favorite Adult Contemporary Artist.  She’s thrilled to be part of an awards show she’s been watching for years — the same one she saw two pals of hers get their big break on.

“I remember, in particular, my friends A Great Big World did their first big performance,” Rachel tells ABC Radio.  “They were playing around [New York City] with us and we watched our first friend make it — ’cause they did that performance with Christina Aguilera and that was on the AMAs.”

Rachel’s referring to the performance of “Say Something” that A Great Big World did with Christina on the AMAs in 2013.  After the performance, the song shot up the chart and became A Great Big World’s first top 10 hit.

Rachel’s competition for the award includes Adele and Meghan Trainor, and she’s convinced Adele, who’s up for five awards in all, will clean up.

“I’m not good at, like, predicting these things,” she laughs.”I think obviously Adele had an incredible year, I’m assuming she’s gonna take home a lot of those beautiful pointy statues.”

But, wait a minute, Rachel.  When you and Adele were both competing for a Daytime Emmy earlier this year, you predicted that Adele would beat you, but you ended up winning.

She laughs, “Oh…well, that’s true I guess!”

Tune in and see if Rachel grabs her first pointy AMA trophy Sunday night: the show airs live at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
